Robot Unicorn Attack
There is a specific 2010 feeling that Robot Unicorn Attack bottled and never let go of: pastel dolphins, a metallic unicorn trailing rainbows, and Erasure's Always playing at full volume while you fail repeatedly. It looks like a joke and it plays like a genuinely tight endless runner, which is exactly why it outlived nearly everything else Adult Swim put on its games portal.
Two Buttons and Three Wishes
The unicorn runs on its own. You control two things: jumping and dashing. Jump lifts you onto the next floating platform, and pressing it again in mid-air gives a second lift, which is your only recovery once you have committed to a leap. Dash is a horizontal burst that both carries you forward and shatters the crystal stars blocking the path.
You get three attempts per run, framed as three wishes. Lose one to a fall or a collision and the music cuts out, restarts, and you continue from a fresh stretch of track. When the third goes, the run is over and your distance is final.

Scoring Is Distance Times Attention
The base score comes from how far you travel, but the multiplier is where the big numbers live. Fairies scattered along the route raise your multiplier when you collect them, and every crystal star you smash with the dash adds to your total. Because a dash also nudges you forward, the greedy line and the safe line are usually the same line β going through the star is generally better than jumping over it.
That is the design trick at the heart of the game. There is almost no tension between playing well and playing for points, so the whole run reduces to a single question asked every second: jump, dash, or both?
Getting Further
- Hold your second jump. The commonest death is spending the double jump at the top of the first arc and then having nothing left when a platform ends earlier than expected.
- Dash horizontally, not hopefully. The dash extends your reach across a gap, so a jump that looks short can be rescued by dashing at the apex rather than jumping again.
- Look at the far edge of the screen. The unicorn moves fast enough that reacting to what is directly in front of you is already too late; read the platform two ahead.
- Do not fear the crystals. They break on contact with a dash. Trying to jump over a star costs more runs than dashing through it ever will.
- Use the music. The track loops at a fixed tempo and the level rhythm settles into it, so once you know the song you can feel a jump coming before you see it.
The Song, and Why It Mattered
Always was an Erasure single from 1994, well into its second life as a nostalgia track by the time the game shipped. Pairing it with a chrome unicorn was the entire joke, and it worked well enough that for a stretch in 2010 the song was inseparable from the game for a whole generation of players. The music cutting off the instant you die is a small piece of comic timing that the game never overuses.
Adult Swim followed it with variants β a heavy metal edition with a different soundtrack and visual palette, a Christmas version, and a full sequel. None of them displaced the original, largely because the original's absurd sincerity is not something you can iterate on.
Why It Still Plays Well
Endless runners became a mobile genre a year or two later and got much more complicated: currencies, upgrades, missions, daily rewards. Robot Unicorn Attack has none of that. It is a high score, two inputs, and a song, and a run takes a couple of minutes. That purity is why it reads as a design piece rather than a period curiosity β there is nothing in it that is not doing work.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many lives do I get in a run? Three, presented as wishes. Each one ends when you fall or hit an obstacle without dashing through it, and the run ends when the last one goes.
What does the dash actually do? It shatters the crystal stars in your path and pushes you forward, which means it doubles as a way to extend a jump that would otherwise come up short.
How do I raise my multiplier? Collect the fairies along the route. Each one increases the multiplier applied to the distance you cover, so a long run with a high multiplier beats a longer one without.
What is the song in Robot Unicorn Attack? "Always" by Erasure, originally released in 1994. It loops throughout play and stops the moment you lose a wish.
Are there other versions of the game? Adult Swim released themed editions with different soundtracks and settings, plus a sequel. This is the original 2010 release.
