What Is Sid Meier's Civilization?

Sid Meier's Civilization is the original turn-based strategy classic, released by MicroProse in 1991 and designed by Sid Meier and Bruce Shelley. It's widely regarded as one of the most influential video games ever made — the title that defined the entire 4X strategy genre (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate) and inspired everything from Age of Empires to the modern Civilization games.

Its single objective: "Build an empire to stand the test of time." Starting before the Bronze Age and lasting all the way to the near future, every game tells a different story of the rise and fall of nations. Civilization is also famous for its "one more turn" addictiveness — there's always a city about to grow, a technology about to unlock, or a rival about to make a move.

How the Game Works (Gameplay Basics)

The 4X loop

You guide a civilization from prehistory to the space age by doing four things, endlessly: explore the map, expand by founding cities, exploit resources to grow and build, and exterminate (or out-diplomacy) your rivals.

Cities, technology, and Wonders

Each city you found produces food, resources, and trade. You decide what to build — military units, city improvements like granaries and libraries, or one of the legendary Wonders of the World, each of which can only be built once across the entire game and grants a powerful empire-wide advantage. Meanwhile, your scientists research a sprawling technology tree of over 100 advancements, from Pottery and the Wheel up to Nuclear Fission and Space Flight.

Combat, diplomacy, and barbarians

You'll meet rival civilizations as you explore. You can trade technology and negotiate peace, or build legions, cannons, and tanks and conquer them outright. Keeping your word matters — break a treaty and your reputation suffers. Unclaimed land also spawns barbarians, roaming units with no nation that will raid your cities if you leave your borders undefended.

Two ways to win

There are two paths to victory:

  • Global conquest — eliminate every rival civilization on the map.
  • The space race — be the first to research space flight and launch a colony ship to Alpha Centauri, winning peacefully through science.

Beginner Tips for Your First Game

  1. Found your first city immediately on a tile near fresh water and good terrain — don't wander too long.
  2. Build a second settler early to expand. More cities means more production and research.
  3. Prioritize early defensive units (Warriors, then Phalanx) to fend off barbarians.
  4. Don't neglect science. A tech lead is the single biggest long-term advantage in the game.
  5. Use diplomacy. Playing rivals against each other is often cheaper than fighting them yourself.

Civilization I vs. Modern Civilization (VI & VII) Online

The game you can play free in your browser here is the original 1991 Civilization — the historic classic. If you're looking for the modern entries with 3D graphics and full online multiplayer, those are separate, paid releases:

  • Civilization VI and Civilization VII are sold on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and consoles, and they support online multiplayer against other players.
  • The free browser version here is the best way to experience where the franchise began — and, for many fans, the purest version of the "one more turn" magic.

If you specifically came here for modern Civ multiplayer, you'll want the official store versions. If you came to relive (or discover) the classic, you're in exactly the right place — just hit Play.

Why Play Civilization Online?

Playing right here in your browser is the fastest, most convenient way to enjoy the classic:

  • Nothing to download or install — start playing in seconds, on any computer.
  • No account or personal information required.
  • Completely free — no hidden costs, no trial limits.

If you love the game and want the modern experience, the latest Civilization titles are available on GOG, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
