What Is Balloon Fight?
Balloon Fight is an action game developed by Nintendo and HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) internationally in 1986. Its gameplay is famously similar to Williams' 1982 arcade hit Joust β but with Nintendo's signature polish and floaty, satisfying physics.
You control a Balloon Fighter with two balloons attached to his helmet. Flap to rise, glide to maneuver, and pop your enemies' balloons to defeat them β all while avoiding the water, a hungry piranha, and bolts of lightning. It's simple, charming, and surprisingly deep once you master the momentum.
How the Gameplay Works
Staying airborne is everything:
- Flapping β tap to flap once, or hold to flap continuously and gain steady lift. Master this for precise control.
- Popping balloons β hit an enemy's balloons from above to defeat them. Pop both of a rival's balloons (or knock them into the water) to take them out.
- Your own balloons β you start with two; if one pops you're harder to keep aloft, and losing both costs a life.
- Hazards β falling in the water, getting eaten by the piranha near the surface, or being struck by lightning all cost a life.
- Bubbles & bonus β defeated enemies leave bubbles you can hit for points, and every few stages there's a bonus round bursting balloons that float up from chimneys.
Game Modes
Balloon Fight offers two distinct ways to play:
- 1-Player / 2-Player Game β clear each stage of all enemy Balloon Fighters. Play solo or co-operatively with a second player. Enemies and platforms increase as you progress.
- Balloon Trip β a single-player, side-scrolling survival mode where you dodge lightning sparks and collect balloons, chasing a high score with just one life. It's the addictive, score-chasing heart of the game.
How to Play
Getting started is instant. Press the Play button on this page and Balloon Fight loads directly in your browser β free, with nothing to install. Then:
- Pick a mode β the main game (1 or 2 players) or Balloon Trip.
- Flap to stay airborne and steer through the air.
- Drop onto enemies from above to pop their balloons.
- Avoid the water, piranha, and lightning.
- Clear every enemy to advance β or survive as long as you can in Balloon Trip.
Balloon Fight plays great on both desktop and mobile. On a computer you use the keyboard (and any USB or Bluetooth gamepad you connect is detected automatically and maps to the NES layout), while on phones and tablets you get a custom on-screen gamepad styled just like a real NES controller β so flapping and steering feel right wherever you play.
Controls
Here's what each control does, mapped to your keyboard:
| Action | Control |
|---|---|
| Move / Steer | Left / Right Arrows |
| Flap Once | Z (A) |
| Flap Continuously (hold) | X (B) |
| Mode Select | V (Select) |
| Pause | Enter (Start) |
On the ground, pressing left or right runs; in the air, combine direction with flapping to accelerate. A connected gamepad uses the same button assignments.
Tips for New Players
- Attack from above. You can only pop an enemy's balloons by hitting them from a higher position β get above your target before diving in.
- Use single flaps for fine control. Tapping the flap button gives precise little lifts; holding it sends you climbing fast. Switch between them to hover exactly where you want.
- Stay away from the water. The piranha near the surface will eat you even if your balloons are fine β keep some altitude over open water.
- Clear bubbles for points. Popping the bubbles that rise from defeated enemies builds your score toward extra lives.
- In Balloon Trip, find a rhythm. It's all about smooth, steady flapping to weave through the lightning β panic-flapping is what sinks most runs.
