Dig Dug

Dig, pump, and crush your way through the underground. Dig Dug is Namco's classic 1982 arcade game β€” a brilliant, addictive maze-digger where you inflate monsters until they pop and drop rocks on the rest β€” and you can play the full NES version right here in your browser, free and with no download. Tunnel through the dirt, outsmart the Pookas and Fygars, and rack up a huge score. Hit the Play button to start digging, and read on for the gameplay, scoring, controls, and tips.

What Is Dig Dug?

Dig Dug is an arcade game developed and published by Namco in 1982 and ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and many other systems. A landmark of the golden age of arcades, it pairs a wonderfully simple concept with surprising strategic depth.

You play Dig Dug (Taizo Hori), digging tunnels through the earth to eliminate two kinds of underground monsters: Pookas (round red creatures in yellow goggles) and Fygars (green dragons that breathe fire). Defeat them by inflating them with your air pump until they burst β€” or by dropping rocks on them as they give chase.

How the Gameplay Works

Dig Dug is all about managing space and risk underground:

  • Dig tunnels β€” carve paths through the destructible dirt to reach and outmaneuver enemies. Digging itself scores small points.
  • Pump enemies β€” latch your pump onto a monster and pump until it pops. Stop too early and it deflates and recovers.
  • Drop rocks β€” lure enemies beneath loosened rocks and drop them for big points (and to clear several at once).
  • Watch the Fygars β€” they breathe fire horizontally; getting burned kills you, but exploding one horizontally scores double.
  • Ghosting enemies β€” monsters can turn into eyes and drift through the dirt to reach you, so you're never fully safe behind a wall.
  • The last enemy β€” the final monster tries to flee off the top-left of the screen; catch it before it escapes or lose the points.

Scoring

  • Digging β€” 10 points per block of dirt dug.
  • Pumping β€” more points for popping enemies deeper underground (the dirt is color-coded by depth).
  • Fygars β€” double points when exploded horizontally.
  • Rocks β€” the first enemy crushed by a rock is worth 1000 points, the next two 1500 each, and any after 2000.
  • Bonus food β€” after dropping two rocks, fruits and vegetables (and Galaxian flagships) appear in the center for extra points β€” grab them before they vanish.

How to Play

Getting started is instant. Press the Play button on this page and Dig Dug loads directly in your browser β€” free, with nothing to install. Then:

  1. Dig tunnels through the dirt to move and set up attacks.
  2. Pump enemies until they pop β€” keep pumping or they recover.
  3. Drop rocks on groups of monsters for big points.
  4. Explode Fygars horizontally for double value (and avoid their fire).
  5. Clear every monster to finish the round and move to the next, faster one.

Dig Dug plays great on both desktop and mobile. On a computer you use the keyboard (and any USB or Bluetooth gamepad you connect is detected automatically and maps to the NES layout), while on phones and tablets you get a custom on-screen gamepad styled just like a real NES controller β€” so digging and pumping feel right wherever you play.

Controls

Here's what each control does, mapped to your keyboard:

ActionControl
Dig / Move (4 directions)Arrow Keys
Pump (inflate enemy)Z (A) or X (B)
1P / 2P SelectV (Select)
PauseEnter (Start)

Hold or tap the pump button to inflate a latched-on enemy until it pops. A connected gamepad uses the same button assignments.

Tips for New Players

  • Rocks beat pumping for points. Dropping a rock on multiple enemies scores far more than pumping them one by one β€” lure them under a rock when you can.
  • Don't over-pump alone. Pumping leaves you exposed; make sure no other monster can reach you while you're committed to a kill.
  • Use the deflate window. A partially pumped monster can't hurt you for a moment β€” pass through it safely if you're cornered.
  • Score points by digging. When the remaining monsters are far away, dig extra tunnels for easy points (10 each).
  • Mind the escaping enemy. The last monster bolts for the top-left β€” cut it off to claim its points before it gets away.

Why Play It in Your Browser?

Running the NES version right here means no cartridge hunting and no console setup: just press Play and start digging. Because it's the genuine NES build, you get the Pookas and Fygars, the pump-and-rock strategy, and the bonus-food scoring exactly as Namco designed them.
