Battle City

Command your tank and defend the base to the last shell. Battle City is Namco's classic 1985 NES tank shooter — a fast, strategic blast where you blow apart enemy tanks before they reach your eagle — and you can play the full game right here in your browser, free and with no download. Roll out, line up your shots, and hold the line across 35 stages. Hit the Play button to deploy, and read on for the rules, power-ups, controls, and tips.

What Is Battle City?

Battle City is a multi-directional tank shooter produced and published by Namco in 1985 for the Family Computer and the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). A successor to Namco's 1980 Tank Battalion, it became one of the most beloved early NES action games — and one of the first to offer two-player simultaneous co-op and even a built-in level editor for crafting custom maps.

You control a tank and must wipe out the enemy armor that pours in from the top of the screen, all while protecting your base (marked by an eagle). Destroy all 20 enemy tanks in a stage to clear it — but if your base is blown up or you run out of lives, it's game over.

How the Gameplay Works

Each of Battle City's 35 stages is a 13×13 grid packed with terrain that shapes your tactics:

  • Brick walls — destructible by any tank's fire; great for carving sightlines or sealing gaps.
  • Steel walls — only breakable once you've collected three or more star power-ups.
  • Bushes — hide tanks (yours and theirs) from view.
  • Ice — makes your tank slide and harder to control.
  • Water — impassable to all tanks.

There are four progressively tougher enemy tank types, and later stages get sneaky — enemies act as decoys to lure you away so another tank can rush your base.

Power-Ups

Destroying the flashing red tanks drops a power-up:

  • Star — upgrades your tank (faster shots, then two simultaneous shots, then the ability to destroy steel).
  • Tank — an extra life.
  • Grenade/Bomb — destroys all visible enemy tanks instantly.
  • Clock — freezes every enemy for a few seconds.
  • Shovel — temporarily fortifies your base with steel walls.
  • Shield/Helmet — makes your tank briefly invulnerable.

How to Play

Getting started is instant. Press the Play button on this page and Battle City loads directly in your browser — free, with nothing to install. Then:

  1. Choose one or two players from the title screen.
  2. Move with the D-pad and fire in the direction you're facing.
  3. Destroy all 20 enemy tanks to clear a stage.
  4. Protect your base — fortify it with the shovel power-up when things get hot.
  5. Grab power-ups from flashing tanks to upgrade and survive the later, harder waves.

Battle City plays great on both desktop and mobile. On a computer you use the keyboard (and any USB or Bluetooth gamepad you connect is detected automatically and maps to the NES layout), while on phones and tablets you get a custom on-screen gamepad styled just like a real NES controller — so steering and firing feel right wherever you play.

Controls

Here's what each control does, mapped to your keyboard:

ActionControl
Move Tank (4 directions)Arrow Keys
FireZ (A) or X (B)
1P / 2P SelectV (Select)
PauseEnter (Start)

Tanks move in four directions only — no diagonals — so positioning is half the battle. A connected gamepad uses the same button assignments.

Tips for New Players

  • Guard the base above all. Losing your eagle ends the game instantly, no matter how many lives you have — wall it off and watch the lanes leading to it.
  • Use the shovel in emergencies. When tanks break through toward your base, a shovel power-up buys you precious seconds of steel protection.
  • Don't over-destroy brick. Walls around your base are protection — only clear the bricks you need to for sightlines.
  • Save the bomb power-up. When the screen is swarming, the grenade clears everything at once — hold it for the worst moment.
  • Watch for decoys. Later stages send tanks to bait you away from the base. Don't chase — hold position and let them come.

Why Play It in Your Browser?

Running it right here means no cartridge hunting and no console setup: just press Play and roll out. Because it's the genuine NES build, you get all 35 stages, the full power-up set, two-player co-op, and the tense base-defense strategy exactly as Namco designed it.
