What Is Golden Axe?

Golden Axe is a side-scrolling beat 'em up / hack-and-slash game released by Sega in 1989, first in arcades and then ported to the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. Characters

You choose one of three heroes, each with a different weapon and a unique style of magic:

• Tyris Flare — an amazon with a longsword and the most powerful fire magic, seeking revenge for her slain parents.
• Gilius Thunderhead — a battle-axe dwarf from the mines, out to avenge his twin brother; short reach but sturdy.

Two players can quest together on the same screen, and your hero's magic type shapes your whole strategy.

Gameplay

Golden Axe is a horizontal hack-and-slash: move through the land of Yuria slashing every enemy between you and Death Adder. Your core toolkit is melee attacks, jumps, jump-attacks, and magic.

Magic is the heart of the game. Kick the little blue gnomes that scurry across stages and they drop magic potions — the more potions you've banked, the more devastating your spell when you unleash it (each character's magic looks and behaves differently). Green gnomes drop food that restores health. Some enemies ride dragons and beasts; knock the rider off and you can mount the creature yourself to breathe fire or strike with its tail. Between stages, bonus rounds let you stomp gnomes for extra potions and food.

The Genesis version also goes a step further than the arcade original: after defeating Death Adder, console players face his mentor, Death Bringer, as the true final boss — an extra fight that makes the home version feel like the definitive way to experience the quest.

How to Play

Getting started is instant. Hit Play and the cartridge boots to its mode menu, where the Genesis version lists The Duel next to the main quest. Then:

1. Choose your warrior — Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, or Gilius Thunderhead.
2. Slash through enemies as you advance across Yuria.
3. Kick gnomes to collect magic potions and food.
4. Unleash magic when you've stored enough potions for a big hit.
5. Mount beasts when you can, and battle through to Death Adder (and the true final boss, Death Bringer).

Keyboard and touchscreen both work. Plug in a USB or Bluetooth controller and it is picked up with no setup, its buttons already in the Genesis order — worth doing here, because the back attack wants jump and attack at the same moment, and two adjacent buttons beat two keys for that.

Controls

Press jump and attack together for a back attack, and tap Magic to spend your stored potions. A connected gamepad uses the same assignments, and having those two buttons side by side under one thumb makes the back attack far more reliable when you are being flanked.

Tips for New Players

• Save your magic for crowds and bosses. A full potion stock does enormous damage — don't waste it on a single enemy.
• Pick Tyris Flare for magic power. Her fire spell hits hardest, ideal if you like leaning on magic to clear tough rooms.
• Steal a beast. Knocking a rider off their dragon and taking the mount gives you reach and crowd-clearing power — keep it alive.
• Use the back attack. When enemies flank you, the jump+attack back hit saves you from being sandwiched.
• Don't miss the gnomes. Every blue gnome you kick is more magic later; chase them down between fights.
