Streets of Rage 2
Widely hailed as one of the greatest beat 'em ups ever made, Streets of Rage 2 took everything that made the original a hit and made it bigger, faster, and harder-hitting. Sega's 1992 Genesis sequel is a 16-bit masterpiece β and you can play the full game right here in your browser, free and with no download. Choose your brawler, hit the Play button, and head back into the fray against Mr. X. Here's your guide to getting started.
What Is Streets of Rage 2?
Streets of Rage 2 (known in Japan as Bare Knuckle II) is a side-scrolling beat 'em up released by Sega in 1992 for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. The sequel to 1991's Streets of Rage, it was critically acclaimed on release and has since been ranked among the best games of all time, thanks to its bigger sprites, deeper combat, and another unforgettable Yuzo Koshiro soundtrack.
A year after the syndicate was toppled, the city's heroes have gone their separate ways β until Adam Hunter is kidnapped and a photo of him chained at the feet of Mr. X turns up. The crime boss is back, and the streets are worse than ever. Axel, Blaze, and friends must mount a rescue mission that ends on Mr. X's island hideout.
Characters
Streets of Rage 2 offers four playable brawlers, each with a distinct fighting style:
- Axel Stone β the balanced veteran with reliable combos and the devastating "Grand Upper" special.
- Blaze Fielding β fast and agile with strong throws and excellent reach.
- Max Thunder β a pro wrestler and the powerhouse: slow but immensely strong, with crushing grapples and slams.
- Eddie "Skate" Hunter β Adam's kid brother, the fastest character, able to run across the screen and dish out quick combos.
Two players can team up in co-op, and your character choice dramatically changes how a run feels β from Max's grappling bruiser to Skate's hit-and-run speed.
What's New in SOR2
This sequel rebuilt the original's engine and added the mechanics the series is now known for:
- Bigger, more detailed characters with smoother animation and richer stages.
- The Special Attack system β a powerful move that works on both offense and defense, replacing the first game's police-car call. Using it costs a sliver of your own health, so it's a calculated risk rather than a limited resource.
- Character-specific moves β each fighter has unique signature attacks, like Axel's flaming Grand Upper.
- Life bars and names for enemies, plus a deeper roster of punks and bosses.
How to Play
Getting started is instant. Press the Play button on this page and Streets of Rage 2 loads directly in your browser β free, with nothing to install. Then:
- Choose your fighter β Axel, Blaze, Max, or Skate.
- Brawl through each stage, clearing waves of enemies before the boss.
- Build combos and mix in grabs and throws to control crowds.
- Use your special wisely β it clears space but nicks your health.
- Grab food to recover and push toward Mr. X's island.
Streets of Rage 2 plays great on both desktop and mobile. On a computer you use the keyboard (and any USB or Bluetooth gamepad you connect is detected automatically and maps to the Genesis layout), while on phones and tablets you get a custom on-screen gamepad styled just like a real Genesis controller β so the brawling feels right wherever you play.
Controls
Here's what each control does, mapped to your keyboard:
| Action | Control |
|---|---|
| Move | Arrow Keys |
| Attack / Combo | X (B) |
| Jump | Z (C) |
| Special Move | S (A) |
| Pause | Enter (Start) |
Grab an enemy by walking into them, then attack or jump to throw. A connected gamepad uses the same button assignments.
Tips for New Players
- Learn your special's cost. Because it drains a little health, use the special to escape a pile-up β not as your main attack. The health is worth it when you're surrounded.
- Master the grab. Walk into an enemy to grapple, then throw them into others. It's the safest way to clear groups.
- Try Max for power, Skate for speed. Beginners often find Axel the most balanced, but Max's grabs trivialize many enemies.
- Use the jump-kick. A well-timed jumping attack hits hard and keeps you out of reach while closing distance.
- Keep moving along one axis. Don't let enemies surround you β sidestep up or down the screen to line them up.
