Streets of Rage
The streets have fallen to crime, and three ex-cops are the only thing standing between the city and a ruthless syndicate. Streets of Rage is Sega's 1991 Genesis beat 'em up classic β the game that answered Final Fight and launched one of the most beloved brawler series ever β and you can play the full version right here in your browser, free and with no download. Pick your fighter, hit the Play button, and start cleaning up the streets. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Streets of Rage?
Streets of Rage (known in Japan as Bare Knuckle) is a side-scrolling beat 'em up released by Sega in 1991 for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. It was Sega's answer to Capcom's Final Fight, and it became a defining title of the 16-bit era thanks to its tight combat, moody neon-soaked stages, and an iconic electronic soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro.
The premise is pure early-'90s action: a once-peaceful city has been overrun by a criminal syndicate led by the shadowy Mr. X, with corruption reaching even the police. Three young officers β Adam Hunter, Axel Stone, and Blaze Fielding β quit the force and take to the streets to bring the syndicate down by force.
Characters
You choose one of three ex-cops, each with a different balance of speed, jumping, and power:
- Axel Stone β a skilled martial artist and the all-rounder: strong hits, decent speed, weaker jump.
- Blaze Fielding β a judo expert and the most agile: highest jump, fastest movement, and powerful throws, though slightly weaker strikes.
- Adam Hunter β a boxer and the heavy hitter: the strongest of the three but the slowest.
In two-player co-op, two of these heroes clean house together β and it's how the game is best experienced.
Gameplay
Streets of Rage keeps things refreshingly simple, built around three buttons: jump, attack, and a screen-clearing special. Each character can punch and kick into combos, perform back attacks when surrounded, grab and grapple enemies, and hurl them to the ground.
Your trump card is the special attack: call in a support police car that pulls up and blasts the screen with explosives, damaging every enemy. You get one special per life (or per level), with police-car power-ups granting extras β so save it for crowded moments and tough bosses.
Levels follow classic side-scrolling structure: move left to right, clearing waves of enemies before a boss waits at the end. Some stages add hazards like "death drops" β pits and an elevator level where you can throw enemies to their doom (and risk the same fate). Scattered items help you survive: melee weapons like bottles and pipes, plus apples and turkeys that restore health. There's even an alternate ending depending on how you respond to Mr. X's offer to join him.
How to Play
Getting started is instant. Press the Play button on this page and Streets of Rage loads directly in your browser β free, with nothing to install. Then:
- Choose your fighter β Axel, Blaze, or Adam.
- Move through each round, clearing waves of enemies as you go.
- Combo, grab, and throw punks to control the crowd.
- Save your special for bosses and when you're surrounded.
- Grab food to restore health and survive to the final showdown with Mr. X.
Streets of Rage plays great on both desktop and mobile. On a computer you use the keyboard (and any USB or Bluetooth gamepad you connect is detected automatically and maps to the Genesis layout), while on phones and tablets you get a custom on-screen gamepad styled just like a real Genesis controller β so the brawling feels right wherever you play.
Controls
Here's what each control does, mapped to your keyboard:
| Action | Control |
|---|---|
| Move | Arrow Keys |
| Attack / Combo | X (B) |
| Jump | Z (C) |
| Special (Police Call) | S (A) |
| Pause | Enter (Start) |
Grapple by walking into an enemy, then attack or jump to throw. A connected gamepad uses the same button assignments.
Tips for New Players
- Pick Blaze to start. Her speed and high jump make crowd control and dodging much more forgiving while you learn.
- Hold your special. It's your panic button β don't waste it on one or two enemies when a boss is moments away.
- Use throws. Grabbing and slamming an enemy is safer than trading blows in a crowd, and near pits it's an instant kill.
- Keep enemies on one side. Back yourself toward a wall so you don't get sandwiched, and pick the group apart.
- Grab weapons. Bottles and pipes hit harder than fists and give you reach β just don't lose them by taking a hit.
